Hundreds of thousands of San Diegans have enjoyed movies on our big screens and we look forward to offering this program for years to come. The creativity and flexibility of park staff allow us to change with the times, capitalizing on technological and societal trends while making the necessary adjustments to movie format. Drive-in movies were also introduced – a way to bring people outdoors, safely, during the pandemic. In 2020, Virtual Summer Movies in the Park were initiated with 24-hour access to select films and accompanying activity kits. The program has continued to evolve with new movies, new parks, new participating partners and new options to make events even more accessible and inclusive. This well-attended community activity deterred inappropriate after-hours park use and loitering and gave residents an opportunity to feel safe in their local park, thus encouraging future visits. Please allow 45 minutes to 1 hour travel time. Distance between the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is 35 miles. The Safari Park is the San Diego Zoo’s sister park to the northeast in Escondido. Come early and get a good seat! The Summer Movies in the Park event series began in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative, giving local residents a reason to visit their local county and city parks for a free and safe evening event.
